Unrequited girl meets boy band

Kat is a seventeen year old in Sydney with a passion for music, just not that produced by the biggest boy band in the world, Unrequited. When her mother gets delayed on a work trip, Kat has to escort her younger sisters, who are huge fans, to an Unrequited concert. Kat can think of a million different things she would prefer to be doing, like studying for her final exams or listening to her favourite band, 5 Seconds of Summer. A chance encounter with a cute boy on the train might just make up for the backstage passes to Unrequited, but will she see him again? The lead singer of Unrequited, Angus, seems to be staring at her during the concert.

Chances are you know her too. You know, no big deal. A glittery, loud, proud and completely unique musical extravaganza. Show her the anti-fan club…. Just give her a proper musician. Or maybe the seriously hot med student who rescued her on the train.

Ideal formal partner, right? Ideal everything…. But when Kat comes face to face with Angus Marsden himself, things start to get complicated. With this kind of blurb, you can imagine the wonderful musical numbers that play out on stage — think cleverly worded boyband numbers, beautifully orchestrated ballads and hilariously vain pop star numbers.

Her voice is superb. With added glitter. Lots of glitter. You can purchase tickets for Friday and Saturday nights performances on the door — first come, first served.

How my book became a musical

Boy Bands and the Performance of Pop Masculinity provides a history of the boy band from the Beatles to One Direction, placing the modern male pop group within the wider context of twentieth- and twenty-first-century popular music and culture. Offering the first extended look at pop masculinity as exhibited by boy bands, this volume links the evolving expressions of gender and sexuality in the boy band to wider economic and social changes that have resulted in new ways of representing what it is to be a man. The popularity of boy bands is unquestionable, and their contributions to popular music are significant, yet they have attracted relatively little study. This book fills that gap with chapters exploring the challenges of defining the boy band phenomenon, its origins and history from the s to the present, the role of management and marketing, the performance of gender and sexuality, and the nature of fandom and fan agency. Throughout, the author illuminates the ways in which identity politics influence the production and consumption of pop music and shows how the mainstream pop of boy bands can both reinforce and subvert gender and class hierarchies. Georgina Gregory is Senior Lecturer for Film and Media at the University of Central Lancashire, where she teaches modules on popular music and youth culture. She never misses an opportunity to drop Hamilton into the conversation, while I… well, you can read about the time I randomly auditioned for a musical here. The musical was staged for the first time in Canberra a few months ago, to great reviews, and so I asked Emma and Sally to write a post to bring together all of those Facebook updates and share with us exactly how one goes about turning a novel into a musical. Ideas for novels hit in the strangest of places. Four years ago, I was sitting in a One Direction concert in Sydney with my then year-old and her sister, enduring the piercing squeals of 20, screaming, infatuated fangirls. I imagined what would happen if you were a teenager dragged to a concert like that against your better musical judgement. My daughter hated reading, but loved boy bands, and I wondered how difficult it might be to merge the two.
