If these precursor cells can be coaxed into becoming fully functioning sperm cells, the technique could allow infertile men to father their own children, and even allow women to produce their own sperm. But experts caution that provoking the sperm precursors to fully mature presents a serious challenge. In July , biologist Karim Nayernia at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK, and colleagues reported they had successfully converted stem cells from mouse embryos into functioning sperm that could fertilise mouse eggs and produce live offspring.

In two mouse models with the Hoxa11 gene defect, which presents in mice as a defective endometrium, the researchers found that a bone marrow transplant from a healthy donor could improve fertility by promoting sufficient decidualization of the endometrium.

In mice with only one copy of the defective gene, the transplant saved pregnancies that would otherwise have been lost and increased litter sizes, while in the mice with two bad copies of the gene, which were thus entirely infertile, the transplant caused growth and repair of the defective endometria.

This study was possible due to a methods breakthrough that Tal and Taylor made a few years ago. Before a bone marrow transplant , chemotherapy or radiation clears the body of the existing bone marrow, so that the donor bone marrow can take its place. Though more research is needed prior to clinical trials, Tal and Taylor see hope for the patients they treat for infertility on the clinical side of their practice in this latest advance.

Bone marrow can be considered another critical reproductive organ. This finding opens up a new potential avenue for treatment of a condition that has been untreatable in the past.

In usual circumstances, when foreign cells such as cells or organs from other people, or infectious bacteria are put into a human body, its immune system will reject such cells or organs. However, a special property of a man's testicles is that they are immune-privileged , that is, a man's immune system will not attack foreign cells such as a woman's cells injected into the sperm-producing part of the testicles. Thus, a woman's cells will remain in the man's testicles long enough to be converted into sperm. However, there are more serious challenges.

There will be some interesting debates raging about this one for a long time. I'm of the opinion that on the whole, we are better off with the process of gene mixing than practicing self-eugenics. Since when is human reproduction about strengthening the gene pool, and since when are your "gay friends" inherently unable to reproduce naturally? Better question is "since when is natural a good thing"?
