Proving that a sequel can actually be better than the original, The Godfather: Part II continues the story of mafia boss Michael Corleone as he struggles to tighten his grip on his underworld empire. The sequel also gives us flashbacks of his dad Vito Corleone's formative days in Sicily. This quote comes after an assassination attempt on Michael, when he advises one his underlings to pretend like he's cool with the guy who ordered the hit. Here's an offer you can't refuse: check out the clip here. Uh-huh, guess what that's referencing? Other pop culture nods have come on Breaking Bad and the X-Files.

The most common scorecard that most businesses use is financially beating their competition. However, sometimes working together with a competitor is actually the best way to achieve a common business goal.

The most extreme version of cooperation is where an entire industry gets together to solve industry level problems. This model has been very popular in Japan. It also was an incredible profitable investment for Microsoft. In the technology area, cooperation among competitors happens frequently because of the price of technological advancement.

A recent example is where electric car manufacturers all have the same charging port standards, so a common charging infrastructure can be used by all vehicles. Unfortunately, extreme cooperation among competitors can also lead to an anti—trust lawsuit by the federal government. Keeping Your Enemies Closer

If this is your first time registering, please check your inbox for more information about the benefits of your Forbes account and what you can do next! In other words, follow not only what your business partners are doing, but what your competitors are involved in as well. The most common scorecard that most businesses use is financially beating their competition.

It is common practice for people to be aware of what their friends are up to but most people ignore what their enemies are doing. This phrase acts as an advice for people, especially who are in a competitive business to be mindful of their enemies to ensure that they are not doing anything untoward. This vigilance would help people overcome any strategy that might have been planned against them.

The point? Not to get carried away with the metaphor, but the advice is in fact smart strategy for the retail battlefield as well. Better yet, why not flip the battlefield on its head and turn the enemies into friends, the competitors into collaborators? In the apparel sector, in the forty years since their inception, branded retail specialty apparel chains have literally stolen the number one share spot from department stores. And, the potential synergies to be achieved here suggest a strategy that is bigger and more powerful than originally thought, a true gamechanger, deserving serious, long term strategic planning, as opposed to just tactically seizing opportunities as they arise.

keep your friends close, and your enemies closer

Most of the time, we're incapable of comprehending certain philosophies until we've endured them firsthand. Sure, it makes sense to keep your enemies close, so you can keep tabs on them and seek revenge by pouring ice buckets over their heads when they least expect it. After going through life and encountering many enemies, I came to learn the quote means something a little more Buddhist and a little less vengeful. I encountered my first enemies when I became the prime target of my high school's "mean girls. The insults hurt like hell and I didn't know what to do with them. A few years later, I made another enemy, but this time, in the form of the notorious "frenemy. At work, one of my coworkers got hold of some of my personal information through social media, and he started to slut-shame me. Pretty soon, a whole group of guys at work were spreading rumors about me, most of which were not true. But, luckily for me, I'd been bullied enough, and at this point, I knew better than to cry about it.
