New look at Cheetah from Wonder Woman 1984
Wonder Woman is still, so far, on target for its August 14 opening, and we've been graced with a couple of new pictures of Gal Gadot in action to get us over the wait.
In particular, we got to see Wonder Woman go up against her foe, Cheetah. We know from the trailer that Cheetah Kristen Wiig begins her journey as the mild-mannered, bespectacled Barbara Minerva.
She's an archaeologist, and in the comics, it's her worldwide travels that results in her transformation in to Cheetah. The comics see her at the centre of a supernatural tribal ritual that possesses her with the spirit of the most nimble and cunning jungle predator. The cheetah, duh. The movie has yet to confirm how Cheetah becomes Cheetah after all, she's no Amazonian , but director Patty Jenkins explained to Empire why.
Jenkins said: "What makes Barbara turn into Cheetah is feeling like she's never been as good as someone like Diana. Then once they start to embrace change, out comes this ugly resentment built up over all those years. The Smithsonian is the perfect place for a super-secret artefact to be hiding, like the Chaos Shard.
In case you aren't sure what the Chaos Shard has to do with anything, we did already examine what it is and how it could be important to the Wonder Woman sequel.
The trailer shows the other baddie Maxwell Lord played by The Mandarlorian 's Pedro Pascal holding a pretty rock while a purple light shines on him from above. We believe that the Chaos Shard is how Lord gets his powers. It also fits in line with everything Jenkins has revealed so far. The Chaos Shard grants Lord powers, including illusion casting, which could explain Steve Trevor's return.
It wouldn't be hard for Maxwell Lord to manipulate Barbara into working on his side. After all, if Barbara wants to be more like Diana, what better way than with superpowers? So, we speculate that Lord convinces Barbara to join him, and the Chaos Shard grants her Cheetah like powers.
The other option is that Maxwell Lord actually uses his powers to get Barbara on his side in the comics, he also has the power of mind control after all. Syfy describes Barbara's evolution as: "The more Barbara pursues a confident lifestyle with Lord, the more her relationship with Diana begins to fracture.
Given how prominent the mysterious stone which we think is the Chaos Shard appeared in the trailer, it's likely to be more than just a pretty rock.
There is always the chance that Barbara gets her powers the way she did in the comics, given that Jenkins has also said the movie goes all over the world. Wonder Woman has a release date of August 14, Digital Spy now has a newsletter — sign up to get it sent straight to your inbox.
